About Big Wheel Towing and Recovery

Big Wheel Towing & Recovery is one of the largest, complete towing and recovery companies in New England. We are located at 42 Quanapoag Road in East Freetown, MA, and we have been at this location for thirty years. We have a large variety of all types of heavy-duty trucks and equipment in stock for sale, as well as an extensive used parts inventory ranging from all kinds of large truck motors, transmissions, rear ends, and cab and suspension parts. We also have a large heavy-duty truck repair shop as well as a body shop with paint booth designed to handle big trucks.

Our History

Big Wheel Towing & Recovery started in 1980 with one tow truck, a 1953 Ford F800. It was formerly owned by Sunbeam Bread, which is how we got the yellow color for our trucks. The Ford only had 42,000 miles on it and stayed inside its whole life. It was equipped with a Holmes 525 unit and a heavy-duty truck tow bar. In 1982, Bob purchased a 1970 9500 series GMC single axle straight job with a 671 Detroit, 10-speed road-ranger. We shortened the truck and put a used Well-Built 600 unit on it to handle the heavier stuff a little better. The following year, we bought a 1970 R-Model Mack and installed a W45 unit on it, now we were really in the towing business.

From then on, every year we've added new equipment. As the times changed, so did we, purchasing bigger and more specialized equipment, including ramp trucks, landoll tractor and trailer units, hydraulic wreckers, cranes, boats, large off-road track vehicles, a hovercraft, and front-end loaders. We now own the largest factory built wrecker in the country, which is our Kenworth T800 five-axle unit with the Jerrdan 85 ton rotator on it. This rotator is the fifth rotator Big Wheel Towing & Recovery has owned. We provide specialized services in addition to basic towing and recovery. All of our Recovery Personnel are WreckMaster 6/7 certified.
